Memo from Marcus:
Joe is out of town attending the annual T.D. Ameritrade Investment Advisor Conference in Florida.
Some Joe Kain’s recent outside activities:
Joe recently served on a business ethics panel at K-State where he presented an actual ethical case study he faced in his career to about 90 student sin the K-State Student Union. The students were asked how they would have handled the problem, and then Joe discussed how he actually dealt with it.
The event was sponsored by the K-State Chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE). Joe has been an advisory board member for 13 years.
In February, K-State is hosting student teams from the Big 12 Conference for an ethics case study competition. Teams will be presented a hypothetical ethical case and then will make a presentation to a panel of judges on how they would deal with the problem. Joe has been asked to serve as one of the judges.
On January 28, Joe participated in a career day at his alma-mater Bishop Miege High School. Joe spoke to students about a career in the investment field.
A positive reading with GDP rising 5.7% at an annual rate in the 4th quarter was reported last Friday which exceeded expectations of economists who had predicted 4.7%. The last two quarter have shown growth and in large part due to a change in inventories.
After a quick start, January’s stock market has reversed itself and traded down. A low in January has often historically been a red flag for the rest of the year, but not always. Joe still believes 2010 will turn out to be decent, but recognizes he could be wrong. The market may follow last years pattern…down in January and February then climbing for the most part for the rest of the year.
