FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sunflower Asset Management, Inc.?
Sunflower Asset Management, Inc. is a fee-only money management firm registered with the State of Kansas.

What is your specialty?
Custom-designed investment portfolios for individuals and corporations, including retirement plans.

What is your investment philosophy?
We are bottom up investors, not market timers. We select stocks based on a highly proprietary system developed over time and continuously refined. "Guesstimates" about the economy, general stock market, etc., are not necessary requirements for our system to perform effectively. Guestimates from the Wall Street propaganda mill are nothing more than entertainment for the masses and do nothing to add value to client portfolios.

How do you achieve your objectives?
We employ "bottom up" analysis of individual securities, and then utilize our proprietary item-by-item check list. We search for legitimate, individual businesses to invest in. Technical market factors also are considered, but to a lesser degree.

How do you determine your fee?
The usual fee is one percent (1%) of the annualized portfolio asset value, but each situation is different, and our fee may be somewhat lower for larger accounts. (See fee schedule under the Portfolio Management section of this site.)

Your competition, including many money management firms and mutual funds charge more. How can you manage money for just 1% or less (depending on the size of the account)?
We keep our office and administrative overhead low. We do our own research. Most new clients are from referrals, not from advertising campaigns, etc. We provide on request a detailed report compiled by our staff that shows the high costs of "no load" mutual funds.

What kind of reports do you furnish your clients?
We provide inventory and performance reports. We also post a Web Commentary which is e-mailed to clients every week, and discusses the current investment environment. The discount brokerage firm sends monthly reports directly to the client. Cost basis information is readily furnished to clients and their tax preparers.

What else do you do for your clients?
Each client's portfolio is unique. We closely monitor each account, and implement changes as necessary to meet the client's specific objectives. This disciplined procedure avoids the emotionalism to which market timers and "do it yourself" investors often fall prey.

How long have you been managing assets?
Joseph Kain has extensive experience as a professional manager, founding Sunflower Asset Management, Inc. in 1984 as a low-cost, fee-only service. Prior to that he managed client investments for five years with a stock brokerage firm.

What is the minimum amount of money that you will take?
Sunflower typically requires a minimum account of $100,000, but reserves the right to accept smaller investment amounts. Prospective clients falling below the minimum have the option of requesting services from Sunflower at an hourly fee of $100 per hour, if mutually acceptable.

Do I have to sell my securities to open an account with you?
No. We will arrange to transfer to the discount broker any of the securities you wish to keep.

Do I write my investment checks to you?
No. You open an account directly with the discount broker, and simply sign a limited power of attorney which permits us to place orders for you.
