For a number of years, I have been speaking on a volunteer basis to high school economics classes about my many years of experience in the investment business. It seemed logical to take it one step further by writing a primer geared towards educating students of all ages.

I am convinced that most adult investors think they know far more about investing than they really do. I say this not as a putdown to investors but only as a personal observation. Some of the reasons for this dilemma include too little time spent in actual research by the investor, reading the wrong sources of “advice”, and misinformation by Wall Street types whose purpose is to manipulate the unsuspecting investor rather than educate.

My objective is to arm both student and adult alike with seasoned, factually based insight as to what to look for and why. The end result: a more informed investor. So much of what so many people accept as “truisms” about investing are actually just flat out wrong. I strive to uncover in a meaningful way some of these myths, and to provide an interesting, practical, useful book for my valued readers.

This fourth edition of Investment Facts of Life is part of an ongoing process. My goals are to improve the message, to update, and hopefully to contribute to all investors’ understanding of the stock market, our economy, and our superior capitalist system. If anyone is stimulated to research these topics further, than my efforts will have been worthwhile. Feedback and suggestions are encouraged and welcome.

The terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, is a vivid reminder of how fragile life is, and what a dangerous world we live in. However, this direct assault on our way of life and our capitalist system is also an opportunity for us to reaffirm our values, and to reflect upon the strength of our economic system. Our future has never looked brighter!
